I've heard a lot of good things from friends about Max Payne, but I was curious what other hardcore gamers think of it? Is it the best FPS shooter ever? I have yet to get a chance to check it out (HDD failure on my gaming box), so I'd like to hear what others have to say about the game.
If you have an opinion, please share. I'd want to hear from everybody out there.
I really enjoyed Max Payne--I thought the gameplay was cool, the attention to detail was probably the best I've seen in a game, but I'm not sure if I'd classify it as "the best". I liked it a lot, but unfortunately, it was just a little too repetetive. I'm a die-hard HalfLife fan and I thought haflife had a brilliant storyline which allowed for enough varied scenarios and objectives that the Gangster thing in MP just couldn't quite hang with.
So while I really dug Max Payne, I'd still put it under HL for all-out gameplay.

I would call the Quake series the best ever.. but it gets old.. so Max Payne is currently the best shooter.
Keep in mind that Max Payne is a TPS, not a FPS.. if it goes in that genre.. hell yes.

Good point. I misspoke in my earlier post.
In fact, I'm embarassed at my earlier assesment about Max Payne being a FPS shooter (since I double spoke - first person shooter shooter - yech!). Regardless, I still feel that one of my personal favorites in TPS arena is the oft-overlooked Fade to Black.
Fade to Black basically pioneered the TPS follow view that was later used in the Tomb Raider series and, of course, Max Payne. Anybody have any experience with this one?
